It's hard to believe that Mary Laine is 5 years old. She is so excited. This morning, I overheard her chanting over and over again, "I'm 5, I'm 5, I'm 5, 5, 5!" It has been such a fun birthday. First of all, she's old enough this year to really appreciate the day and the significance of a birthday. Also, her birthday last year fell in the middle of a mysterious illness that she couldn't seem to shake. Thankfully everyone has been well for her birthday this year.
We have been at the beach again for her birthday this year. Since her Papa and Uncle Wa-Wa left early this morning for a bowl game, we celebrated at dinner last night at a Japanese Steakhouse. Uncle Will and Aunt Susan were here again this year and were able to join us.
This morning, Mary Laine found a hall-full of balloons after she woke up. We went to a local cafe for breakfast. While we were there, another table got the attention of everyone in the restaurant to make an announcement (the presentation of a belated high-school sports award). We took advantage of the camaraderie and asked everyone to join us in singing "Happy Birthday" to Mary Laine.
One of her birthday presents was a pirate costume. Since Peter Pan is her favorite story these days, she has loved pretending to be "Captain Hook". She loved that she got to be a pirate at breakfast this morning.
After breakfast and a few games of Peter Pan, we went to a bowling alley. Mary Laine was a big winner of the day, outscoring even her Daddy fair and square! She and Langdon also enjoyed getting to play some arcade games. Little things like this are a pretty big deal for this small-town crew.
We've had a fun and low-key afternoon hanging out with family. Since our big celebration was last night, we rented a movie to watch tonight. I would say that Mary Laine has enjoyed her day.
Our attempt at a "2,3,4,5" picture (Susanne is 24, Langdon is 3, and ML is 5). Thankfully we have 10 months to keep trying for this one. |
As always, we asked Mary Laine her "birthday questions". Click here if you want to compare to her answers from last year.
